"Knowledge is good." Emil Faber
Are you an inventor? Do you want to patent your invention? Here are your options:
A. Pay some nice lawyer thousands of dollars to patent your best idea;
OR,
B. Learn how to do it yourself and patent all of them.
Thomas Edison was a listed inventor in 1093 patents, some of which were hugely successful. His first one, however (for an electric voting machine), earned him nothing. Edison swore he'd never do that again, but of course, he did.
Spending 9 to 12 thousand dollars (or more) on a patent from which one earns nothing can sour a sane person toward this type of activity. Most independent inventors give up after their first patent goes bust. Albert Einstein did (a refrigerator). It's a good thing Edison kept plugging, because not long after the voting machine sank, Edison sold a subsequent stock ticker patent for $30,000. Not too shabby for 1870.
Patenting is a lot like fishing. You might catch a record lunker on the first cast, but then again, you might not catch anything. Almost all successful inventors have multiple patents, a great many of which are "dusters", as the oil men say.
